Up for Debate: Does school start too early?

As students head back to school, start times are once again up for debate in Florida.

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. — As students head back to school, start times are once again up for debate in Florida.

A 2023 law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis would have required middle schools to start at 8 a.m. and high schools at 8:30 a.m. The law was later repealed, leaving individual school districts to set their own schedules.

Some argue earlier start times make it easier for students to participate in sports and activities while balancing family schedules. But opponents say early starts can leave students waiting for buses before sunrise.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association have supported later school start times, citing potential academic and health benefits for teenagers.
