CORAL GABLES, Fla. – A burrito supreme. Pineapple crumble cake. Nachos. These are pretty straightforward dishes to make, but try doing so in an outdoor setting with several dozen tween girls competing for a prize.

Last month, Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida hosted the 9th annual “Cast Iron Chef” outdoor cooking contest. The contest was held at Camp Mahachee in Coral Gables. Approximately 80 girls participated.
Twelve teams of Girl Scouts and one adult team competed for the Golden Spoon Award. The teams prepared recipes, and a twist was introduced.
The teams had to incorporate an unmarked canned good into their final dish. These canned goods included chicken, pineapple and other fruits.
A team of chef judges, including Miss Debbie, founder of Sweet Delights, would taste their custom creations and choose one group as the winner.
“The fact that they were able to work in a group setting, with one another, to come up with a concept was impressive,” said Miss Debbie.
The teams would be judged on presentation, creativity and taste. In the end, Panda Bears Troop 2311 came out on top for their Burrito Supreme cooked using a foil pack method.
“I was amazed of their knowledge of food, the spices and what they liked, and how they articulated their creativity,” added Miss Debbie.
Other celebrity judges included chef and media personality Chef Pepin, food blogger and influencer Nicolas Norena and tour guide and influencer Carolina Florez.
