Renowned DJ brings plant-based comfort food to South Florida

MIRAMAR, Fla. ā€“ A vegan lifestyle can be hard to transition, but one place in South Florida is hoping to make it easier for you.

Itā€™s called The Krazy Veganā€” and was created by a local radio personality.

Alex ā€œBig Lipā€ Chisholm is changing the food game with The Krazy Vegan, who just opened their second location in west Miramar to help others transition into the vegan lifestyle and bring plant-based comfort food to South Florida.

ā€œFirst of all, Iā€™m vegan and if you listen to me on the radio, you know Iā€™m crazy,ā€ said Chisholm.

Chisholm told Local 10 News a health scare was the motivation behind changing the way he eatsā€” which led him to create a new place for vegans.

ā€œThe thing that most people donā€™t understand is how do you make it taste like this and everything is plant-basedā€”like the cheese, the bacon, the bread has no milk, and you lose absolutely nothing,ā€ he said.

The Philly native has made South Florida his home for more than 25 years and is bringing culture to his food.

ā€œWe have our Philly cheesesteak, which is also our biggest seller,ā€ said Chisholm. ā€œThatā€™s the one dish that I put so much time into it, with the peppers, the onions and the vegan cheese.ā€

ā€œThe menu was filled with ā€˜Krazyā€™ names and even crazier flavors,ā€ he said. ā€œI put my own spin on what Krazy means.ā€

The vegan restaurant is also known for its Krazy Kowboy, which has onion rings, vegan bacon, vegan cheese, BBQ sauce and their signature krazy sauce.

Chisholm says the business wasnā€™t created overnight.

ā€œI spent a lot of money on food too,ā€ he said. ā€œI messed up a lot of food, but we came up with the recipe and then before we even opened, we had people come and try the food. We got a lot of feedback and after that, the Krazy Vegan was born.ā€

ā€œDoes it surprise you when people come to support your business, some of these celebrities?ā€ asked Local 10 News reporter Alexis Frazier.

ā€œYou know whatā€™s really surprising, and what I really appreciate is that they donā€™t want anything for free,ā€ said Chisholm. ā€œThey come and spend their money and go, ā€˜You know what, we want to support your business, we want to support a black business,ā€™ except Omarion, he didnā€™t pay.ā€'

Foodies will also be able to check out the restaurantā€™s ā€œWall of Krazies.ā€

ā€œAnybody can be on the Krazy wall, but notable people go in color and our regular patrons go in black and white. I must tell you, youā€™re going in color right here,ā€ Chisholm told Frazier.

ā€œYou have Warren Sapp and Wyclef Jean,ā€ he said. ā€œWyclef could not believe it was a plant-based burger. You also have Lamar Jackson.ā€

Regardless of whether you make the wall or notā€”Chisholm says his restaurant is worth a try.

ā€œIā€™ve created a safe place for people who have that negative connotation about vegan food, where they think they have to eat cardboard or something,ā€ he said.

Chisholm also plans on opening a food trailer in Wynwood Gardens soon.
