AileyCamp Miami is back. Now in its 15th yearā the camp provides opportunities to middle school-aged kids and transforms their lives through the arts.
āI found out about the Ailey program through my cousin, and my sister who was here before me. Now its my turn to show them what I have,ā said camper Sebastian Warner.
They learn everything from modern dance to percussion. Itās a chance to motivate the future generation through music and dance while also tapping into their personal development through creative communication classes.
āThese are classes that, for 11 to 14-year-olds, they get to talk about conflict resolution, peer pressure, bullying, drug awareness, health and nutrition,ā said Jairo Ontiverso, vice president of education and community engagement at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.
Middle school students from throughout Miami Dade County are part of the free six-week held under the dazzling lights at the Arsht Center.
This yearās theme is resiliency.
āI did Ailey Camp in 2013, ā said Kaleb Barkley. He was a camper 10 years ago and is now working with the students.
āI love programs that want to create art for the purpose of wanting to do it and especially when its centered around kids,ā he said.
Alvin Aileyā a world-renowned dancer, choreographer and activist, founded the Alvin Ailey American dance theater.
Ailey camp is an an extension of his workā a belief that dance is for everybody and can have a positive impact on the lives of children
āMy favorite style of dance is modern or ballet because you are able to move your body and to meld all the styles,ā said camper Astrid Zepeda Vallejos.
Calyn Best has her own reasons for wanting to be part of the camp.
āItās good to have the Ailey experience because Ailey can take you a long way and Iām glad to be here.ā
