MIAMI – The Urban Film Festival returns Friday to Miami’s Overtown neighborhood with over 150 free screenings.
During its 9th year, the 12-page program of events includes three days of networking opportunities. Filmmaker Marco Molinet, a festival co-founder, was on Local 10 News Fresh Daily Friday.
“It’s one of the largest free film festivals in America,” Molinet said. “We have about 3,000 participants that come out. We do about 26 activations. free masterclasses, free workshops.”
One of the highlights co-produced by Molinet is the premiere of “The Reject,” a film about Miami-Dade Commissioner Kionne McGhee.
The screening is at 8:30 p.m., Saturday, at the piano-shaped Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater, at 819 NW Second Ave. Molinet said the RSVP list for seats filled up quickly.
Actor Kamal Ani-Bello, who participated in “Moonlight” and “David Makes Man,” stars in the film. He said the festival’s 1st Take Youth Film Program has supported his career.
“No project is big or small because once it’s out it can do anything,” said Ani-Bello, an Indie filmmaker.
Aside from the Black Archives Historic Lyric Theater, the festival also has events at five other venues:
- Overtown Performance Arts Center, at 1074 NW Third Ave.
- Dorsey Library at 1700 NW First Ave.
- Red Rooster at 920 NW Second Ave.
- The Urban Miami at 1000 NW Second Ave.
- D.A. Dorsey House at 250 NW Ninth St.
