Orange Blossom Classic: Miami Carol City Senior High musicians prepare for battle of the bands

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – Kendra N. Bulluck-Major was at the Local 10 News studio Sunday to show off some talented local musicians preparing to compete during the upcoming Orange Blossom Classic’s battle of the bands.

Bulluck-Major, the executive director of the Orange Blossom Classic Committee, introduced a group of Miami Carol City Senior High School Band members.

“They are joining us today just to get a little preview,” Bulluck-Major said before the student musicians performed live during the FRESH segment.

The Orange Blossom Classic has come a long way from 1933 when J.R.E. Lee Jr., the son of the Florida A&M University president, started it. There is a long list of events ahead of the North Carolina Central University’s Eagles vs. Alabama State University Hornets game at 3 p.m., on Sept. 1, at the Hard Rock Stadium, in Miami Gardens.

The half-time show will feature the NCCU’s Sound Machine Marching Band and the ASU’s Mighty Marching Hornets Marching Band.

Bridget McKinney, the principal of Miami Carol City Senior High School, was gleaming with pride when she escorted her students to the Local 10 News studio.

McKinney plans to do the same during the battle of the bands at 6 p.m. on Aug. 31, at the Watsco Center at the University of Miami, 1245 Dauer Dr., in Coral Gables. Tickets start at $24.

Bulluck-Major also has a countdown for the cheer clinic at 9 a.m., on Aug. 30, at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex, at 3000 NW 199 St., in Miami Gardens. Registration is $30 for a single participant or $25 per person for a group.
