Delaney Benson brings Ariel to life in ‘The Little Mermaid’ at South Miami’s Area Stage

MIAMI – Delaney Benson steps into a role with deep family roots, bringing Disney’s beloved Ariel to life in South Miami’s Area Stage immersive production of “The Little Mermaid.”

For 34 years, Disney’s The Little Mermaid has captivated audiences.

Benson, 23, now embodies the red-headed mermaid in a full circle moment for her and her family.

“It really has been so special to grow up with Ariel,” said Delanie Benson.

To Delaney, Ariel represents more than just a courageous girl yearning for another world. Delaney’s connection to Ariel runs deep, as her mother, actress Jodi Benson, voiced the original Ariel.

“We were at the hotel together when she got the call,” said Jodi Benson. “Inside, I was leaping for joy because I knew it would just be a matter of time before she would get to tackle this role.”

Jodi Benson said she’s grateful to watch her daughter bring new life to Ariel.

“It brings tremendous joy to me that Ariel has a life and she can touch so many people in so many generations,” she said.

It’s a moment of passing the torch, as Delaney makes the character her own. This journey has been a symbolic passing from one Benson to another, sculpting and molding the character anew.

“I get a little emotional talking about it,” said Delaney Benson. “It has been really, just a great experience getting to know this character more and my mom a little more.”

Delaney Benson told Local 10′s Samiar Nefzi that she found it special to connect with both the character and her mother more deeply.

Fans can catch Delaney Benson as Ariel in Area Stages’ production of “The Little Mermaid” now through Aug. 4. The show has been extended until Aug. 11.
