Miami-Dade teacher accused of having 'improper relationship' with student

PINECREST, Fla. – A South Florida high school teacher quit his job Wednesday after an allegation was made that he had an "improper relationship" with a student, Miami-Dade County Public School District officials said.

According to the school website, Alex Osuna taught marine science and biology at Miami Palmetto Senior High School at 7460 SW 118th St. in Pinecrest.

Students said he also coached the girl's lacrosse team.

Parents who spoke to Local 10 News the day before Osuna submitted his letter of resignation said they were upset that they hadn't been notified about the allegation by the school.

The parents said their children had heard rumors about the allegation, but had yet to be informed by school officials.

"The investigation resulted from an allegation of an improper relationship with a student," MDCPS said in a statement Wednesday. "Today, the school district received a letter of resignation from the employee, and his employment was terminated."

School officials did not provide further details about the allegation, but said that Osuna had been "reassigned away from the school" after the allegation was made.

School officials said Osuna will not face criminal charges since he and the student are both adults.

He was employed by the school district for nine years and is barred from seeking further employment in the school district.
