Florida Keys schools to start reopening next week on staggered schedule

2 schools in area hit hardest by Hurricane Irma will reopen Oct. 2

Students in the Florida Keys will start to return to class next week.

KEY WEST, Fla. – Schools in the Florida Keys will begin to reopen next week on a staggered schedule as the community begins to return to normal after Hurricane Irma.

"The revised staggered start reopening of our schools is based on input from many sources and is supported by county and community leaders," Monroe County Superintendent Mark Porter said Tuesday. "Reopening schools is a significant step toward returning to a sense of normalcy for all of our communities."

Five schools will reopen Monday -- Plantation Key School, Coral Shores High School, Key Largo School, Ocean Studies School and Treasure Village Montessori.

Employees at those schools will return to work Thursday.

All of the following schools in Key West and Marathon will open Sept. 27 -- Stanley Switlik Elementary School, Marathon Middle High School, Gerald Adams Elementary School, Horace O'Bryant School, Key West Collegiate Academy, Key West High School, May Sands Montessori Charter School, Poinciana Elementary School and Sigsbee Charter School.

Employees at those schools will report to work Sept. 25 and Sept. 26.

Two schools in the area most impacted by Irma -- Big Pine Academy and Sugarloaf School -- will reopen Oct. 2. Employees there will return to work Sept. 28.
