School ranks among worst 10 in Miami-Dade on violence

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Brownsville Middle School is at 4899 NW 24th Ave, in Miami's Brownsville neighborhood near Liberty City.

The school was among the Miami-Dade public schools with the most safety incidents reported to the Florida Department of Education during two consecutive school years.

During the 2012-2013 school year, the school was among the top 10 schools in South Florida on reports of fighting.

During the 2013-2014 school year, the school was again among the worst 10 schools on violence in the district and the state. And about 81 percent of the school's reports were on fighting.

According to Miami-Dade, there were 696 students enrolled as of Feb. 13, 2015, and about 90 percent of them qualified for free or reduced price lunch.

Academics also suffered. The school had an "F" grade during 2013-2014 school year and "D" grade during 2012-2013 school year.
