MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – They can serve as garden decoration, an enjoyable toy for kids and educational tool, but in April, the pinwheel also serves as a symbol of child abuse prevention.

On April 3, which kicked off Child Abuse Prevention Month, hundreds of organizations across the country planted blue pinwheel gardens. With even the slightest breeze causing them to spin delicately, each pinwheel represents the power of hope to uplift vulnerable children and youth.

“These pinwheels represent far more than numbers,” said Silvia Smith-Torres, CEO of His House Children’s Home. “They are symbols of strength, healing and the joyful childhood every child deserves.

In South Florida, His House Children’s Home, a faith-based nonprofit dedicated to restoring the lives of kids ages newborn to 18, planted 1,500 blue pinwheels at its Miami Gardens campus. The number of pinwheels represents each child who has received care at His House after experiencing abuse, abandonment or neglect.

“Today, we renew our commitment to standing in the gap for the most vulnerable in our community,” added Smith-Torres.

The ceremony included staff, community partners and kids who currently reside at His House. All took part in planting the bright blue pinwheels and reflecting on the triumph that can come from the deepest of tragedies.
