Apotex, the largest Canadian-based drug manufacturing company, awarded the organization a three-year grant totaling $726,000.
HMHB/Broward received the first $242,000 installment of that grant last Thursday at its Lauderhill office and will use it to support The Mahogany Project, which provides critical health resources to high-risk pregnant women in Broward County.
“With this support, we can continue our mission of ensuring that every mother and baby has access to the healthcare resources they need for a healthy start,” said Dawn Liberta, Executive Director of HMHB/Broward. “It will go a long way to sustain the zero infant mortality rate that we have enjoyed these past four years.”
Through The Mahogany Project, mothers receive parenting education and learn how to monitor and improve their health. The program is designed to enhance access to care, improve birth outcomes and address the social determinants of health that disproportionately impact underserved communities.
Apotex launched its Global Health Access Fund this year and is allocating $1 million annually to maternal health programs across Canada, the United States, India and Mexico. HMHB/Broward is the first U.S. recipient of the fund.
“This underscores our commitment to addressing health inequities,” said Christine Baeder, President of Apotex USA. “By investing in organizations that prioritize maternal health, we are making a tangible impact where it is needed most.”
