Back-to-School Project: Local 10 collecting school essentials for kids in need

MIAMI – Most back-to-school lists might not include undergarments, socks and personal hygiene products. These are basic essentials kids need to be ready for the first day of class and beyond.

It’s why Local 10 has teamed up with The Embrace Girls Foundation, a local nonprofit founded in 2000 that provides after school programming, mentoring, social and wrap-around enrichment services to elementary and middle school aged girls.

This Friday, the organization is hosting a “shopping experience” that allows the girls it serves to “shop” for the items they need and like for back-to-school. The event caps the organization’s summer camp program.

“Our back-to-school superhero event is the highlight of the summer for our campers,” said The Embrace Girls Foundation CEO Velma R. Lawrence. “They look forward to shopping for new backpacks, cool supplies and all the essentials needed for a great start to the new school year.”

Local 10′s Nicole Perez and crew will be with the Embrace Girls Foundation on Friday to capture the experience and also surprise the kids with more gifts.

We are inviting Local 10 viewers to get involved by making a secure, monetary donation.

Local 10 has established a fund with The Miami Foundation to receive online donations for the sole purpose of assisting the most vulnerable of our community.

One hundred percent of funds donated are funneled to projects that benefit deserving people and organizations in South Florida. We document these donations through news stories that show exactly how and for what purpose they were used.

To give, click here and fill out the form.

Stay tuned to Nicole Perez’s “Mom-to-Mom” series airing Tuesdays at 5 p.m. on Local 10 to see how much of an impact your donations made.

“Along with my team, I take pride in seeing the joy on each student’s face as they fill their backpacks with items they love,” added Lawrence.
