Police seek answers about 22-year-old man’s killing in Palmetto Bay
PALMETTO BAY, Fla. – Miami-Dade police are investigating after a 22-year-old man was fatally shot last week in Palmetto Bay. The shooting occurred around 5 p.m. Jan. 6 in the area of Southwest 92nd Avenue and 176th Street. The victim, Aaron Nelson Swerdloff, was shot outside a home and his family is still desperate for information about who killed their son. According to his family, the home where the shooting occurred belongs to a family whom Swerdloff had been friends with for most of his life. According to police, he was transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Jackson South Medical Center with serious injuries.
Why was a tank driving around a Miami-Dade neighborhood?
PALMETTO BAY, Fla. – Video on social media showed what looked like a military tank driving around a Palmetto Bay neighborhood on Sunday. Commenters on the Cutler Bay Social Facebook page wondered if the tank was part of a military operation. But a spokesperson with the Florida National Guard said the tank was not part of its fleet, and military experts said the tank appeared to be a British combat vehicle. The matter was cleared up by Miami-Dade Police, which issued a statement that read:“Miami-Dade Police Department, Village of Palmetto Bay units received reports of a military-style vehicle observed on the Village roads. “It’s a poor choice of timing to have military equipment like that in a residential neighborhood,” resident James Woodard said.
Driver crashes into Walter’s coffee shop in Miami-Dade

Woman says driving into coffee shop was 'accidental'It happened before 3 p.m. Monday, shortly before the establishment was set to close. Grace Berbrick, the owner of Walter’s Coffee Shop, said she knew the elderly woman very well. “She’s very old, she doesn’t need to be driving.”A driver crashed into Walter's in Palmetto Bay on Monday afternoon. No one else inside the coffee shop was injured, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

Supermarkets stick with social distancing rules as people stock up on supplies

Everyone in line as wearing a mask, but the social distancing outside is a little too close for comfort. Store managers are trying their best to enforce social distancing inside by only allowing 25 customers at a time in the store. In Palmetto Bay, residents prepared for Hurricane Isaias by loading sandbags in their cars. South Florida residents Local 10 spoke to said they weren’t really worried about Hurricane Isaias, they just wanted to be prepared.
Drive-through food distribution open every Monday in Palmetto Bay
As long as there is a need for food, Christ Fellowship and Feeding South Florida are determined to meet it. Every Monday, beginning at 12:30 p.m., families from across South Florida can come to the church’s Palmetto Bay campus and receive a heaping bag of essential groceries, including fresh produce and protein-enriched foods. People are not permitted to exit their vehicles or walk-up to receive the food donations. Feeding South Florida and the church expect to help at least 500 families every Monday. Coronavirus won’t stop South Florida choir from performing beautiful music.
PALMETTO BAY, Fla. – In a time where meetings, gatherings, and practices are being canceled due to the coronavirus, a South Florida choir is using technology to bring a little joy to the world. The Children’s Voice Chorus is a non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire change in youth through music and education. By using a little editing magic, the group created a “virtual choir” to perform “Bridge Over Troubled Water” by Simon and Garfunkel. Residents in Palmetto Bay concerned about pack of dogs roaming at night
PALMETTO BAY, Fla. – A pack of dogs roaming Palmetto Bay has already killed at least two cats. Animal services believes they may belong to someone as pets, being released at night. Residents are concerned if the dogs aren't caught, someone could be hurt. Surveillance video captured half a dozen dogs wandering around the Palmetto Bay neighborhood in the middle of the night last month. On that particular night, one resident told Local 10 News the dogs attacked his cat, Queso.
Students mourn teen who was killed in boat accident
PALMETTO BAY, Fla. – Students were back in class Wednesday, days after one of their peers was killed in a boat crash in the Florida Keys. “This community, the best thing they can do is to come together and show their support for everyone that’s hurting right now,” former Westminster Christian School student Ransom Reed said. The private academy in Palmetto Bay is mourning 18-year-old student Lucas Alvarez, who died Sunday following a boat crash off the coast of the Keys. While Reed said he didn’t get to know Alvarez too well, he said they did have several mutual friends. Officials said two other teens were also ejected from the boat, but they were not injured.
Westminster Christian School students mourn lacrosse player who died in boat crash
PINECREST, Fla. – Friends, family members and Westminster Christian School students and faculty are mourning a 17-year-old who died in a boat crash on Sunday afternoon off the Florida Keys. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is holding a red and white boat that was involved in a fatal boat crash off the Florida Keys on Sunday. The school’s website listed a varsity lacrosse team player with the same name as the boat operator. The captain of his lacrosse team, Alvarez wore the #6 jersey and played defense. According to the school’s announcement, students are set to return to school on Wednesday, administrators are organizing a special assembly for high school students and faculty, and therapists will be available for small group counseling sessions.
Burglar smashes way into Palmetto Bay smoke shop
MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. - Police are searching for a burglar who smashed his way into a smoke shop early Monday in Palmetto Bay. The video shows the burglar checking out where the owners typically keep cigarettes but he doesn't find what he's looking for. He boxes up the items and cash and then leaves the building all within about a minute and a half. "We did have a rash of break-ins previously and this person does look very similar to the person that committed those," Carrasco said. Carrasco said he hopes anyone who recognizes the man in the video does the right thing.
