MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Dolphins General Manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel gave an update on Tyreek Hill’s current situation with the team and provided an outlook on the team’s 2024 season on Tuesday.
Grier clarified that while Hill did not explicitly request a trade, he did not backtrack on his previous comments about wanting a change.
“He didn’t ask for a trade with me,” Grier said.
“Mike and I had conversations with Tyreek, productive conversations. I will keep those between us. In a frustrating season, he was very emotional in a game where we had a chance coming back from 2-6,” Grier added.
The star wide receiver appeared to indicate after the Dolphins’ 32-20 loss to the New York Jets on Sunday that he could want to play elsewhere next season.
“This is the first time I haven’t been in the playoffs,” Hill told reporters after Sunday’s game. “For me, I have to do what’s best for me and my family, if that’s here or wherever the case may be. I’m (going to) open that door for myself. I’m opening the door.
“I’m out, bro. It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I’ve got to do what’s best for my career,” Hill added. “I’m too much of a competitor to be just out there.”
Hill changed his profile picture on his X account to feature his face on the body of Antonio Brown, taken from the moment Brown ran off the field for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022.
Hill signed a $90 million contract extension over the next three years with $65 million of it guaranteed back in August.
McDaniel also shared insights on team discipline following a series of player tardiness issues this season.
McDaniel admitted that fines, which had been imposed for repeated lateness, were not effective in addressing the problem.
“One thing I learned is fining guys didn’t particularly move the needle in the way we need to,” McDaniel said. “I’ll adjust as I should as a head coach.”
I appreciate Mike McDaniel’s honesty in talking about fines not working on players for being late, etc, but bigger question is why is this happening 3 years into his time as head coach? That’s a level of disrespect from players that’s tough to understand.

McDaniel emphasized that tardiness had become a recurring issue, especially for certain players who had been fined multiple times.
“It won’t be tolerated,” he said, noting that the issue was a focal point during a recent team meeting.
Grier also had a message for Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa during Tuesday’s press conference.
“He needs to be available and control what he can control,” said Grier. “Not being available and taking risks is unacceptable to us. He knows that.”
Tagovailoa missed the final two games of the season and six games overall after signing a four-year, $212.4 million extension back in June.
Grier also called the Dolphins’ 2024 season “unacceptable” and said he feels that the team has the right people in place to right the ship.

Grier also stated that Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was also “frustrated” with the season’s outcome and reiterated that changes will be made.
