Police officers responded shortly before 3:10 a.m. to an apartment building at the Laguna Gardens, at 20781 NW 17 Ave., near the Hard Rock Stadium.

4 p.m. report:

There was crime scene tape near a covered outdoor lounging area in the new resort-style leasing community featuring one to three-bedroom apartments.

An officer with a police dog searched a nearby parking lot at the gated apartment complex.

The initial unconfirmed report that police officers responded to was that a teenager had been injured during an accidental shooting.

“I was a little shocked when I heard about it,” said resident Delena Echevarria. “It’s unusual for this area and it’s not something that I want to continue to happen.”

The Miami Gardens Police Department had yet to confirm the report.

When reached for comment, the complex’s management called it an isolated incident.

In an email to residents obtained by Local 10 News, they announced plans for several new security measures. The letter stated, in part:

“We are installing two cutting-edge camera systems that will provide real-time access to the Miami Gardens Police Department. These systems will enable continuous monitoring and round-the-clock recording of activities throughout our property ensuring swift response to any incidents.”

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477 to remain anonymous.
