POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – Police are investigating what now appears to be a murder-suicide that occurred inside a Pompano Beach home.
According to authorities, 80-year-old tenant James Sheridan shot and killed two people before turning the gun on himself.
5 p.m. report:
“It’s shocking. I don’t understand it,” said family friend Anita Horten. “I hope we can make sense of it.”
Horten identified Colleen Sheridan, James’ wife, and their son Connor as the two victims.
“I just want people to know she was one of the most amazing people. She had the biggest heart and we’re gonna miss her,” said Horten. “Connor was a great kid. I’m sure he had a great future ahead of him. Very smart bright young man.”
Home surveillance cameras captured the moments a Broward Sheriff’s Office deputy looked through window after window after responding to a wellbeing check for the residents who live at the home inside the Leisureville retirement community Wednesday night.
Moments later, the home is swarmed by investigators after three people are found shot dead inside.
“The whole thing is just shocking,” said neighbor Lauren Gultz. “The detectives, the sheriff’s deputies, eight or nine police cars you know the crime scene units.”
Gultz told Local 10 News’ Roy Ramos residents nearby called in the welfare check when they noticed the vehicles parked outside the home located off South Golf Boulevard hadn’t moved in several days.
“We don’t know what happened, the neighbors were very quiet people,” she said, “We saw them coming and going and would just wave, nobody really knew them.”
Neighbors told Local 10 News an elderly couple lived inside the home with their adult son.
“You live next to people for a year and you have no idea,” said Gultz.
Homicide detectives could be seen working through the night and well into the morning, assuring residents their community was safe.
“They assured me that I am fine and my neighbors are fine and this was something internal from what they think right now,” said Glutz.
Authorities have yet to officially disclose what the relationship was between the victims and the suspect.
