Jonathan Saba, 34, of southwest Miami-Dade, was taken into custody hours after deputies said he struck and killed a pedestrian along Northwest 79th Street.

According to an arrest report, the victim was “walking on the roadway” and “pushing a red shopping cart” near Northwest 17th Avenue just after 5 a.m. when Saba, driving west, struck her from behind, knocked her to the pavement and kept on driving.

The victim’s name wasn’t included in the arrest report. She was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Authorities said surveillance video from a nearby auto wholesaler showed the crash, and data from a nearby license plate reader identified Saba’s 2013 Jeep Cherokee as a possible match.

The report states that detectives went to Saba’s apartment in the Century Park South community, located off Southwest 136th Street in the Country Walk area, and saw the Jeep in the parking lot “with damage consistent with striking the victim.”

Vehicle parts collected from the scene “appeared to be a match,” deputies added.

Deputies went to Saba’s apartment and he made a statement which was redacted from the publicly-released arrest report.

They took him into custody at around 12:20 p.m. on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash causing death.

Saba, listed in the arrest report as a Haitian national, was given a $5,000 bond Wednesday and ordered to be on house arrest if released.

As of Wednesday morning, he was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.
