According to an arrest report, Yuniel Casanueva, 40, was charged with attempted murder last Thursday as he was already being held in jail for an unrelated case.

The Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the shooting occurred the afternoon of Nov. 6 in a shopping center along Krome Avenue and Southwest 192nd Street.

Authorities said deputies arrived at the scene and found a 40-year-old man who had been shot once in the abdominal area.

According to the report, the victim told deputies that he was approached by an unknown male who told him, “Today is the day you die,” before the man fired one shot at him.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel airlifted the victim to Jackson South Medical Center where he underwent surgery.

According to detectives, a witness who owns a food truck at the shopping center told them she knows the victim as “El Gato,” and said he regularly frequents the shopping plaza.

The witness also said she saw a man, who was wearing distinct yellow boots, jeans and a hat, walking past her food truck right before she heard the sound of a gunshot.

She said the man then ran away after the shooting, jumping into a black sedan that was parked in the shopping center.

Another witness who also operates a business in the shopping plaza told detectives that the suspect entered his store prior to the shooting, asking to purchase matches.

He said he recognized the man, because he also frequents the shopping center and is known as “El Rubio.”

He said El Rubio has an eye disfigurement and is known to have worked at a sports bar in the area.

According to the arrest report, surveillance video from a nearby liquor store captured the shooting.

A detective later identified “El Rubio” as Casanueva as he was allegedly involved in a separate shooting that the detective was investigating.

According to the report, the male witness also identified Casanueva in a photo lineup.

A motive for the shooting was not disclosed in the arrest report.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Casanueva was being held at the Metrowest Detention Center without bond.
