FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – It will be a duo celebration in Miami-Dade and Broward Counties.
On January 17, the YMCA of South Florida will host its 21st Annual Inspirational Breakfast and Luncheon events to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The century old nonprofit, which is committed to strengthening the community through more than 200 programs, will assemble a panel with Judge Glenda Hatchett, a former juvenile judge, award-winning TV show host, author and community advocate. Local 10 News Anchor Calvin Hughes will serve as the moderator.

The first panel will take place in Broward, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m., at First Baptist Fort Lauderdale, located at 301 East Broward Boulevard. The second panel will take place in Miami-Dade, from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Jungle Island, located at 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail.
“The Y is proud to continue this tradition of bringing our community together to honor Dr. King’s memory and legacy in a meaningful and impactful way,” said YMCA of South Florida CEO Sheryl A. Woods. “These celebrations are a testament to our commitment to community celebration and service to others.”
Both events will help raise funds for the YMCA of South Florida’s “I Have a Dream” Youth Scholarship Fund. During the events, the YMCA of South Florida will present two awards. The first is The Dave W. Cash Youth Leadership Award, which is a $2,000 scholarship given to a student in Miami-Dade and Broward County that embodies the ideals of Dr. King in advocating for social change. The second award is The Spirit of Community Award, which recognizes a community advocate in both counties who exemplifies the civic engagement and diversity ideals of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The YMCA of South Florida will also host a youth town hall and service project as part of its Dr. King celebrations.
