MIAMI – Miami-Dade jurors reached verdicts Friday afternoon in the resentencing trial of the two men convicted in the murders that inspired the movie “Pain & Gain.”
Noel Doorbal and Daniel Lugo appeared in court together as jurors read their verdicts.
The jury recommended that both Lugo and Doorbal avoid the death penalty and serve life in prison without the possibility for parole. The judge then formally imposed both sentences.
In Lugo’s case, the jury agreed unanimously with three of the six aggravating factors presented by the state, while Doorbal’s jury agreed with two or the six.
It’s been nearly 30 years since the murders that placed them both on death row. Doorbal and Lugo, bodybuilders and members of the Miami Lakes “Sun Gym Gang,” were convicted of kidnapping and killing Kristina Furton and Frank Griga.
The victims were injected with horse tranquilizers, and Griga was brutally beaten. Their bodies were discovered stuffed into barrels.
The original death sentences for Lugo and Doorbal were overturned, leading to the new resentencing trial.
