“When he walks in, the clerk is giving him signs, like no,” Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said. “He sees the guy with the knife. The guy’s doing an armed robbery.”

The sheriff said the deputy and suspect, identified as Glenn Gotell, began to fight and the deputy was stabbed in the arm and chest.

He said the suspect then jumped into the deputy’s patrol car and took off.

According to WPBF, another deputy was nearby and assisted the injured deputy.

“He saw what was going on, came down, had the equipment with him necessary, put a chest compression thing on, tourniquet on his arm,” Bradshaw said. “And then we got the fire medics here.”

The injured deputy underwent surgery Tuesday and was listed in critical but stable condition.

Bradshaw said he’s expected to survive.

WPBF said Gotell was taken into custody after a massive manhunt.

He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, robbery with a firearm, armed burglary and grand theft of a motor vehicle.

As of Wednesday, he remained in jail without bond.

The identity of the injured deputy has not been released, as of the time of publishing.
