POMPANO BEACH, Fla. – A man is facing multiple felony charges after Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies said he wielded a “wet floor” sign as a weapon as he tried to rob a senior who just paid for breakfast at McDonald’s.

According to a BSO arrest report obtained by Local 10 News on Thursday, the incident happened Tuesday at the Golden Arches at 1490 NW 31st Ave. in Pompano Beach.

The report states that the 66-year-old victim turned around with his wallet in his hand when Donnelle Antoine Gaines, 35, of Hollywood, “approached him, grabbed his arms and demanded his money.”

Deputies said the victim broke free and ran behind the counter.

At that point, BSO Detective Michael Avona wrote that Gaines “picked up a plastic wet floor sign that had a broken bottom, which created a jagged edge and pursued (the victim) behind the counter and swung it at him,” cutting the man in the forearm.

Gaines then took off from the restaurant and deputies located him walking on Northwest 31st Avenue, the report states.

The report states a deputy activated his cruiser lights and ordered Gaines to stop, but, instead, the suspect ran away.

Deputies caught up with Gaines and placed him into custody, according to BSO.

Gaines had been convicted in a previous battery case on Oct. 9, 2023, the report states.

Deputies arrested him on charges of armed robbery, aggravated battery, battery on a person 65 or older, battery second or subsequent offense and resisting arrest without violence.

As of Thursday afternoon, Gaines remained in the BSO Main Jail on a $40,500 bond, jail records show.
