SUNRISE, Fla. – The American Cancer Society and over 15,000 participants continued to make strides against breast cancer at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise Saturday morning.
With breast cancer being the most common cancer in women in the United States, organizers called the event “a celebration of courage and hope,” and a movement that seeks to unite communities to end breast cancer.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and millions of people, including cancer survivors, raised money to benefit the American Cancer Society, and to encourage women to get annual mammograms for early detection and diagnosis of the disease.
From survivors to those still battling with cancer, to caregivers and even family members and supporters, the funds for the event are lifesaving as the donations go towards research and help in advancing health equity through essential programs and services.
Local 10 News heard from one survivor who participated in this event in the past not knowing she herself would be diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Five months later I would be starting my own breast cancer journey and get diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma,” said Diedre Ferenc. “Last year, in 2022, I did my very first walk as a breast cancer survivor, and this year will be my second year doing the walk as a breast cancer survivor.”
Fighting against breast cancer at MIA
Another fight against breast cancer in Miami-Dade County kicked off Saturday morning as more than 2,500 runners participated in the third annual Miami International Airport Runway 5K Series.
Aviation officials cleared the north runway for the runners in an effort to raise money for cancer research and raise awareness of the second leading cause of cancer death among US women.
