SOUTH MIAMI, Fla. – Two men are in critical condition after being ejected during a crash on U.S. Highway 1 in South Miami.
The early morning crash Tuesday blocked all lanes between Southwest 70th Street and Southwest 57th Avenue for about eight hours. All lanes reopened shortly after 11:30 a.m.
"It woke me up, just boom," James Lee Anderson, who heard the crash just after 4 a.m., said.
Miami-Dade police said a BMW was traveling north when it struck a business and a wall at Sunset Place.
Both men, who are in their 20s, were ejected from the car.
"It's terrible," Sgt. Henry Guzman said. "I mean, you see parts of the engine. ... The car (was) pretty much blown apart."
Parts of the engine, doors and tires were found scattered feet from the car.
Both men were taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center in critical condition, police said.
Police said the road was closed for several hours as crews cleaned up debris and building inspectors examined the large hole/crack in the building.
Florida Power & Light workers were also called to the scene because the driver struck a light pole and authorities were worried that it might collapse.
