Hurricane Matthew moves closer toward Florida coast, downgraded to Category 3

Tropical storm warnings lifted for South Florida

PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – South Florida appears to have been spared the worst of Hurricane Matthew as the Category 3 storm moves closer toward the Florida coast.

As of 8 a.m. Friday, the storm was moving along the coast in a north-northwest direction at 13 mph with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph.

Matthew is currently located about 25 miles east of Cape Canaveral.

Matthew's feeder bands reached South Florida early Thursday, with heavy winds and surf pounding the coast, but nothing near as bad as it was projected to be.

A tropical storm warning has been discontinued south of Boca Raton.

Matthew has left a path of destruction in Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas. More than 100 deaths in Haiti have been blamed on the storm.

The forecast track has Matthew making a loop in the Atlantic Ocean, bringing it back near the Bahamas and the coast of Florida.

"This system is not done with Florida and other areas of the southeast coast," Local 10 News chief meteorologist Betty Davis said.
