Scott says state law enforcement providing escorts to fuel trucks during Irma gas crunch

Governor establishes transportation hotline for residents wanting to evacuate

HIALEAH, Fla. – Gov. Rick Scott said Florida law enforcement is providing escorts to fuel trucks to help them get to gas stations faster while state residents scramble to get away from the threat of Hurricane Irma.

Scott spoke Thursday about the measures he is taking to alleviate the long lines and empty pumps at gas stations throughout the state.

"We know fuel is very important, and we're absolutely devoting every state resource to addressing this," Scott said.

The governor said he's been in communication with retailers and oil companies to quickly get gas to stations that need it. He also recognized the frustration that drivers are experiencing trying to find gas.

"I know this has to be very frustrating, and we will not stop working on this," Scott said.

The state has a dedicated transportation hotline for people who want to evacuate but don't believe they have enough gas to do so. The number is 800-342-3557.

"If you're an evacuation area and you don't know how to get out, we will get you out," Scott said.

Scott urged Floridians to take only the gas that need. He said those who are staying at local shelters don't need to fill up their tanks.
