Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola nominated Secretary of the Army

Panthers ownership to remain in Viola family

SUNRISE, Fla. – Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola was nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the Secretary of the Army, Trump's transition team announced Monday.

Viola graduated in 1977 from the United States Military Academy and earned his juris doctor degree in 1983 from New York Law School.

He is lauded for being a former U.S. Army infantry officer and national security expert.

The nomination remains subject to Senate confirmation.

"We are honored and humbled to see Mr. Viola nominated as the Secretary of the Army. We could not be more proud for Vinnie and his dedication to our country," Panthers President and CEO Matthew Caldwell said in a statement.

A Florida Panthers spokeswoman said ownership of the hockey team will remain within the Viola family.

"Our hockey team has always been proud to be part of Mr. Viola's legacy. We admire his dedication to his country and are excited to watch him pursue this new endeavor," President of Hockey Operations Dale Tallon said.

If appointed to the position and pending NHL approval, the spokeswoman said Viola has chosen Douglas A. Cifu to step into his role as chairman and governor of Sunrise Sports and Entertainment.

Cifu currently serves as vice chairman and alternate governor of the club.

Viola purchased the Panthers on Sept. 27, 2013.
