PEMBROKE PARK, Fla. – The baby girl of late Miami Marlins player Jose Fernandez, Penelope "Jo" Fernandez, is featured in a People magazine article, along with her mother, and Fernandez’s girlfriend, Maria Arias.
In the article, Arias says Fernandez loved his daughter "from the moment she was conceived."
The Marlins superstar died in a boating accident in September with two other men, just weeks after learning he'd be having a baby girl.
Arias said between funerals, memorials and investigations, all she wanted to do was" lock myself in our room and be alone."
Last month, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission released its final report into the boating crash off Miami Beach, which determined Fernandez was the operator of the boat.
The details listed are gruesome and heartbreaking.
But Arias said she's focused on her baby, who was born Feb. 24.
She keeps a piece of Fernandez’s clothing and had it on when the baby girl was handed to her.
"I will forever talk about him. I will never let his memory die. I will always keep him alive, no matter how much that hurts me. Because she deserves that from me, and from all of us,” she said.
