The Marlins introduced Jennings as the 11th full-time manager in team history Monday morning.
Jennings joined the Marlins as vice president of player personnel in 2002. He was promoted to general manager after the 2013 season.
He briefly coached in high school in Mobile, Alabama, in the 1980s.
"It is out of the box," Jennings said. "I will not deny that."
Redmond was 155-207 in his three seasons with the Marlins. After last season, Redmond received a contract extension through 2017, but the Marlins got off to a poor start for a team with lofty expectations.
The Marlins, who won the World Series in 1997 and 2003, have a history of firing managers midseason.
In July 1996, the Marlins fired their first skipper, Rene Lachemann, who compiled a 221-285 record.
Jim Leyland took over the next season and guided the team to its first playoff berth and, ultimately, the world championship.
After Leyland resigned in 1998, the team hired John Boles, who had guided the Marlins to a 40-35 record as interim manager after Lachemann's firing in 1996.
Boles was fired in May 2001, having compiled a 205-241 record.
Jeff Torborg took over in 2002, but the Marlins fired him after they started the 2003 season 16-22.
Jack McKeon guided the Marlins to the world championship the next season but resigned after the 2005 season.
That led the Marlins to hire current New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi in 2006, but the relationship soured and he was fired at the end of the season.
Next up was Fredi Gonzalez, who was fired in June 2010 with a 276-279 record. He is now manager of the Braves.
Edwin Rodriguez resigned midway through the 2011 season, and the Marlins turned to former Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen in 2012. However, Guillen was suspended for five games that April for his controversial comments supporting former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Guillen was fired after the season.
Sampson said there were no conversations with other potential candidates, and team owner Jeffria Loria endorsed the hire.
"In my heart, this is a playoff team," Jennings said.
