Thatā€™s the way to start a season for the Miami Hurricanes.

Yes I know it was FAMU.Ā

Yes I know they were supposed to win big.

But I left impressed not just because they did what they were supposed to do, but instead impressed with HOW they did what they were supposed to do.

Anyone whoā€™s watched UM over the last decade knows that the Canes have been plagued with penalties, mental mistakes, defensive breakdowns and other issues, even during wins.

I know itā€™s only one game, but I saw a team on Saturday that seemed to have bought into new coach Mark Richtā€™s system.

The mistakes were down, as Miami committed just 6 penalties and one turnover.Ā

The special teams had a blocked punt and punt return for a touchdown.

Miami didnā€™t have to rely on star QB Brad Kaaya.Ā Ā

He was just 12-18 for 135 yards, though 4 of his 12 completions resulted in touchdowns.

And most impressively on offense, the Canes had three 100-yard rushers.Ā

Mark Walton led the way with 116 yards, while Gus Edwards and Joseph Yearby each powered their way to 106 yards on just 7 carries.

The young defense didnā€™t get tested much by a very bad Rattlers offense, but it was a good way for the newcomers to get their feet wet.

Trust me, those three freshman linebackers will get tested as the schedule rolls on.

More than anything, this team looked well prepared and well coached.Ā

Thatā€™s not something Miami fans have not said very often of late.

The Mark Richt era started with a huge crowd and blow out win.Ā

One win against a terrible team doesnā€™t make a season, but it was exactly what UM fans needed; hope.

And a sign that maybe better times are ahead with the Richt regime in place.
