MIAMI – A woman was shot and killed in an apartment complex in Miami's Overtown neighborhood.
It happened about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday near Northwest Eighth Street and Fourth Avenue.
Miami police said the woman's 5-month-old daughter and 4-year-old son were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting.
Police said they are looking for Wilmer Samaron, who left the scene in a black Chrysler Pacifica with Florida tag DNZG72. Police are not considering the 28-year-old a suspect at this time, but they want to question him.
According to the victim's brother-in-law, Douglas Deford, the woman was being abused by Samaron and was about to leave him. He told Local 10 News reporter Glenna Milberg that Samaron shot the woman while she was sleeping. He said Samaron put the children in another room with a cousin and left the home.
"Why did she stay with him?" asked Milberg.
"Well, she wanted to forgive him all the time," said Deford. "Until this happened, my wife was trying to take her out of here but she said, 'No, I love him and I prefer to stay here." Deford said his sister-in-law had her belongings packed in suitcases, so he believes she was going to leave him this time.
The children are now in the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
