Miami-Dade police said Tanes, 87, shot a woman, who is related to his longtime girlfriend, in the hospital lobby before shooting himself. Tanes was pronounced dead at the scene, and the woman, identified as Margery Glickman, 69, was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
According to detectives, the Tanes' girlfriend of more than 30 years died at the hospital Sunday. They said it appears that he was upset over her family changing the status of her will, including guardianship, and called the victim to ask her to come to the hospital.
Police said they were seen speaking in the lobby before Glickman began to walk away. That's when Tanes fired multiple shots, striking Glickman several times, police said.
Glickman remained in critical condition on Tuesday.
