Police: Woman jumps into police car, crashes into another officer

Both taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital

MIAMI – A police officer and a woman were injured in a crash Friday morning after the woman jumped into a police car, authorities said.

The crash was reported in the area of Northwest 28th Avenue and Seventh Street at 10:47 a.m.

Miami police Officer Frederica Burden said officers were dispatched to the area in reference to a woman who was running in traffic.

Police said the woman was trying to jump off the roof of a home when they arrived. Burden said the woman jumped down, got into a police officer's car and crashed into another police car that was coming for backup down the street.

"I was on the sidewalk when I see the lady jumps into the police vehicle and the cop tried to drag her out, but by the time he tried she booked it, and the other cop was turning in and she just head on collided right into him," a postal carrier, identified as Chris, said.

Burden said the woman tried to run off after the crash, but was taken into custody on Northwest 29th Avenue by the officer whose car she stole.

The officer involved in the crash and the woman were both taken by paramedics to Jackson Memorial Hospital. The officer was listed in stable condition and later released. The woman suffered more serious injuries and is being treated at the hospital's Ryder Trauma Center.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
