Bicyclist dead, another injured in Rickenbacker Causeway crash

Police say driver initially fled scene before returning

MIAMI – A bicyclist was killed and another was rushed to the hospital after a crash on the Rickenbacker Causeway early Wednesday morning.

The men were riding their bicycles in the eastbound lanes on Key Biscayne when they were struck by a Volkswagen Jetta shortly after 5 a.m.

A Miami-Dade police officer patrolling the area arrived at the scene and called for help.

"It does appear like the bicyclists were in their lane," Detective Daniel Ferrin told Local 10 News.

Walter Reyes, 49, was pronounced dead at the scene. Henry Hernandez, 40, was taken to the emergency room at Mercy Hospital in serious condition.

Miami-Dade police said the driver initially left the scene, but he later returned. Police believe the driver may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

All eastbound lanes of the Rickenbacker Causeway were closed near the Miami Seaquarium for several hours during the investigation.
