High-ranking officer crashes police truck into wooden fence

AVENTURA, Fla. – A high-ranking Opa-locka police officer has been arrested in Aventura on suspicion of drunken driving.

Opa-locka police spokesman David Chiverton told Local 10 News on Monday that Maj. Peter Cruz was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.

Cruz, 56, is accused of crashing his police truck into a wooden fence.

Aventura police said Cruz crashed the truck early Monday morning near Aventura Boulevard and West Country Club Drive.

According to the police report, Cruz, who was off duty at the time, was having trouble standing.

"The defendant swayed while standing and stumbled when he attempted to walk," the report said. "The defendant nearly fell off the fence after losing his balance. Then he dropped his cellphone as he fumbled with it."

When asked to perform a field-sobriety test, Cruz refused, the report said.

"I ain't doing those tests, man," the report said Cruz told police. "I know I'm (expletive."

Police said Cruz was so intoxicated that he stripped naked in his holding cell, fell asleep and urinated on himself.

Cruz also faces a charge of DUI causing property damage. He has been placed on paid administrative leave.
