MIAMI – A 27-year-old man was back in bond court Friday morning after prosecutors raised his charges from aggravated child abuse to attempted felony murder.
Antwan Sawyer was arrested in Miami early Tuesday morning and is accused of severely beating his girlfriend's 5-month-old son.
Prosecutors told the judge baby Andres was on life support, and his injuries were so severe that he could die. Baby Andres was eventually pulled off life support Saturday afternoon.
Since Andres did not survive, prosecutors said they will likely charge Sawyer with murder.
Investigators said Sawyer told them the baby fell of the bed, but doctors told police Andres' injuries were non-accidental.
Andres was hospitalized at Miami Children's Hospital on Monday with severe brain injuries, a lung contusion, retinal hemorrhaging to both eyes and bruising to his buttocks. According to the arrest report, the injuries occurred while the baby was alone in a car with Sawyer.
Sawyer is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on no bond.
Local 10 News learned Sawyer has a lengthy arrest history that dates back to 2005. He has been arrested in Miami-Dade County on various charges ranging from cannabis possession to aggravated assault with a firearm.
No criminal records are listed for Sawyer in Broward County.
Family and friends of the baby's biological father have set up a "Justice for Baby Andres" Facebook page.
A Go Fund Me page has also been set up for baby Andres.
Loved ones planned a candlelight vigil for Andres at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Miramar.
