MIAMI – Miami police were called to a crash Monday afternoon and found a baby on the side of a road with her unconscious mother by her side.
The crash was reported about 1 p.m. in the area of Northwest 12th Avenue and Northwest 20th Street.
Authorities said the baby was found in her car seat on the side of the road, and her mother was lying nearby. The mother's boyfriend was passed out inside the car, authorities said.
"The child appeared to be somewhat awake, but very hot, very sweaty," Miami Department of Fire-Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said.
Police said the woman and her boyfriend possibly overdosed on heroin.
The 2-month-old baby was taken to a fire station by officers and was turned over to the Department of Children and Families.
A Miami police source told Local 10 News that the child's mother has a history of heroin use. The source said the couple was given Narcan and taken to a hospital.
Sky 10 was above the Opa-locka Regional Service Center as the baby was brought to the DCF office inside the building shortly before 6 p.m.
Authorities said the baby is in custody of the DCF until a shelter hearing takes place.
The identities and conditions of the mother and boyfriend have not been released, but a family friend said the woman is now conscious and talking.
