FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A South Florida jeweler for several celebrities was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at his Fort Lauderdale home Tuesday morning.
The Broward County medical examiner's office told Local 10 News that the death of Mark Levinson, 60, was ruled a suicide.
His death was reported at 4:42 a.m. and the body arrived at the morgue at 7:35 a.m.
Levinson is the namesake of Levinson Jewelers, which was a favorite stop for convicted Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein.
In sworn depositions, Rothstein implicated Levinson in a money-laundering scheme, but he was never charged with any crime.
Levinson paid a settlement in 2013 stemming from a lawsuit related to the bankruptcy of Rothstein Rosenfeldt Adler, the defunct law firm where Rothstein was a partner. Rothstein is now serving a 50-year prison sentence for the $1.2 billion fraud.
The prominent jeweler was very involved in philanthropy. He worked to help the charity for songwriter John Oates, one-half of the musical group Hall & Oates.
Levinson also donated money to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Young at Arts Museum and abuse victims in Aspen, Colorado, where he had a second home.
Lauren Tannenhill, wife of Miami Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannenhill, was featured prominently in Levinson Jewelers advertisements.
Former Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino was once a spokesman for Levinson Jewelers.
