Witnesses said a neighbor spotted a man trying to break into two homes in the area. They said the man appeared agitated and was heard saying that someone was chasing after him. Neighbors told deputies that they didn't see anyone else in the vicinity.

Deputies said at one point the man climbed onto the roof of a home, jumped into the backyard and then got into a kayak in a nearby lake.

Witnesses said the kayak flipped over and the man never resurfaced.

Deputies said a neighbor paddled out in another kayak and tried to rescue the man but was unsuccessful.

The man's body was taken to the Broward County medical examiner's officer for an autopsy.
