MIAMI – Major changes are underway on South Florida's highways as new bridges, ramps and roadways on the Palmetto and the Dolphin Expressway open up beginning Friday.
The new connections include a Palmetto southbound flyover bridge to the eastbound lanes of the Dolphin Expressway, which will open on Friday.
Permanent eastbound mainline lanes will open Saturday morning on the Palmetto eastbound from Northwest 87th Avenue to 57th Avenue. Drivers exiting at Northwest 72nd Avenue/Milam Dairy Road or West Flagler Street will need to exit about a half-mile earlier.
On Sunday morning, a Palmetto northbound flyover bridge to the Dolphin Expressway westbound will open. Also opening is a northbound Palmetto direct ramp to the eastbound Dolphin Expressway, and permanent northbound Palmetto travel lanes from Southwest Eighth Street to the Dolphin Expressway.
A temporary three-month detour will be in place after 6 a.m. Saturday for drivers on Northwest 87th Avenue and West Flagler Street going to the eastbound Dolphin Expressway.
Officials with the Florida Department of Transportation said the $500 million changes will provide a smoother commute for the 400,000 drivers who use the interchange on a daily basis.
