DAVIE, Fla. – Medics rushed a 10-year-old victim to an area hospital after a fire broke out at a mobile home in Davie.
The fire broke out Monday afternoon in the 600 block of Southwest 132nd Terrace in the Western Hills Estates neighborhood.
6 p.m. report:
A family of 12 that includes six children who lived in the home are now displaced.
One of those kids is 10-year-old Isaiah Salome, who was hospitalized. His aunt says the fire started in his room.
“Around 4 o’clock I heard a pop go off,” said Alexandrea Vallejo, one of the displaced residents. “By the time I came out of my room, my nephew ran out of his room and the whole room was already on fire, the flames were too big to put out so we just had to get everybody out of the house.”
Home surveillance video shows Salome hosing himself down, his skin is red and his aunt said he suffered second degree burns to his arms and legs.
She said she believes he was trying to plug something in his room when the fire started.
The family was able to make their way out, but their home is uninhabitable and now they are left to pick up the pieces and find a new place to stay.
“I just thank God that my kids are ok, that everybody got out safe and half of the kids weren’t home when it happened,” said Vallejo.
She added that she believes Salome will make a full recovery.
A Davie Fire Rescue spokesperson said the victim was taken for treatment as a trauma-alert patient.
“Crews are on scene actively working this incident and the American Red Cross has been requested to assist affected residents,” Fire Marshal Robert Taylor.
