Investigation underway after woman found dead in North Miami Beach canal

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – Police are investigating after they say a woman was found dead inside a North Miami Beach canal Monday morning.

According to North Miami Beach police, the woman was found dead in a canal at Snake Creek Park, located at 601 NE 165th St.

Authorities said officers brought the body back to shore using a floatation device and “no foul play” was expected at this time.

Police have not confirmed how long the woman’s body was submerged in the water before it was discovered.

A Local 10 News crew was at the scene where dive team members retrieved the woman’s body from the canal.

North Miami Beach resident Abel Mercado told Local 10 News that the canal is next to an overpass, which is a known hangout spot for those who are transient and have nowhere else to go.

“They go to the canal. They sit there, they fall asleep, and then overnight, what happens is they fall into the water, and they drown, he said.

He also said this is not the first time someone has lost their life after falling into that canal.

“For me, this is the second time. I’ve been living here for 35 years in this neighborhood. Unfortunately, that’s what’s happened,” said Mercado

Police have not released any information about the victim’s age, identity and cause of death at this time.

Anyone with information is urged to call the NMB police at 305-949-5500.
