Family holds candlelight vigil in Hialeah: ‘We lost our sister, auntie and our mom is in critical condition’

Liliana “Lili” Hernandez Molina remains hospitalized after crash involving 15-year-old driver in father’s car

HIALEAH, Fla. – The loved ones of Yarnia Garcia Hernandez, Gloria Hernandez, and Liliana “Lili” Hernandez Molina met on Saturday near the scene of a crash in Hialeah. There was a candlelight vigil, flowers, prayers, hugs, and tears.

Garcia Hernandez, 39, and Hernandez, 53, died after the crash on Tuesday night in Hialeah. Hernandez Molina, 66, who was a passenger, was injured, and she remained at Jackson Memorial Hospital on Sunday.

The three women were related. Yipsy Osorio Garcia, who set up a fundraiser to help with the funeral costs, wrote she received the tragic news on Wednesday morning.

“We lost our sister, auntie and our mom is in critical condition,” Osorio wrote. “Our family is heartbroken, devastated and will never be the same!”

Police officers arrested Maykoll Santiesteban, a 15-year-old boy without a driver’s license, who admitted to stealing his father’s car and going for a joy ride.

Jenna Rivera, who was at the vigil, said learning about the arrest angered her because it all could have been prevented had he made better choices.

“It made me very upset,” Rivera said. “The fact that someone so early in age had done this, and maybe he had thought that, ‘Maybe it’s OK for me to take my parents’ car.’”

Prosecutors want to charge Maykoll as an adult. He is facing two counts of vehicular manslaughter and three counts of driving without a license.

Detectives asked anyone with information about this or other cases to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.
