HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A man is dead and a woman is in serious condition after an overnight boating crash.
According to Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission, just after 1 a.m., the open fisherman was heading southbound on the Intracoastal when somehow it hit the west sea wall and then careened all the way across the waterway, crashing into the east sea wall.
When Hollywood Fire Rescue arrived at the scene, they found 45-year-old Odallys Diaz had been ejected from the boat. She was transported Hollywood Memorial regional in very serious condition.
The boat operator, 41-year-old Aldo Antonio Rodriguez was pronounced dead at the hospital.
"Hollywood fire rescue arrived on the scene and at first did not even see the victim. Apparently the victim -- the only words I can use is -- was swallowed up by the vessel itself and ended up in the hull of the vessel," said FWC's Jorge Pino.
Based on the damage to the boat, investigators believe speed may have played a role in the accident. They say the boat was in a no wake zone at the time of the crash.
