MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. – Less than an hour from the official start of lobster mini-season, thing got busy at Crandon Marina as boats worked their way into the water.
"You put your lobster gloves on. You jump in the water, use your net and then you grab it," a fisherwoman said.
She makes it sound easy.
Children, parents, everyone heading out for night one of the two-day season was fired up on Tuesday.
Some people at the dock were planning to be out until daylight to catch the lobster.
With so many people hitting the water in the middle of the night the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission preached one thing above all else, safety.
"Safety is the key, we ask everyone to be alert to their surroundings, not only to the people in your group but other groups around you," Lorenzo Veloz of the FWC, said.
Lobster mini-season does come with a set of rules.
There's a limit of 12 per-day per person in Miami-Dade County.
Fishers have to measure the lobster in the water to make sure the carapace or the head is longer than 3 inches. If not, it must be tossed back.
And make sure to have paperwork, as a fishing license and permit is required in order to bring the good stuff home legally.
"It's a misdemeanor, something that will stick with you for life," Veloz said.
So play by the rules. And happy lobstering!
