HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – A Hollywood police officer was hurt and a man was killed during an altercation at an apartment complex Monday afternoon.
Police said officers were called to a disturbance about 2:45 p.m. Monday when a fight broke out at the complex in the 1800 block of Jackson Street.
The man was behaving erratically and was violent towards the officers. Police said there was an altercation after the man attacked the officers.
One of the men involved in the fight was stunned with a Taser gun. The man was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
"The Taser was deployed and that was the only instrument used in the altercation as far as the police officer is concerned," Lt. Derik Alexander told Local 10 News.
Police did not release the name of the suspect.
The officer was also taken to Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. A witness told Local 10 News that the officer was bleeding from his head.
"Occasionally we have to deal with people that are sometimes combative, that are sometimes disturbed," Alexander said. "In this instance, we don't know what that particular issue was."
Alexander said police are investigating Monday's incident as an in-custody death.
