Guns found at Brownsville Middle School, 4 students charged

Other students spotted guns and reported to law enforcement

MIAMI – Four students are facing charges after two guns were found Wednesday morning at Brownsville Middle School in Miami.

According to a Miami-Dade Public Schools police spokesman, one gun was found in a student's backpack and another was being carried by a student on his body.

K-9 units were also spotted searching for guns at a park across the school as a precaution.

Students said they saw police search one of the suspect's backpack. They said the boy tried to run but police slammed him to the ground.

One parent described what she felt when she found out students were carrying guns at her child's school.

"What went through my mind was total fear. Absolute fear," she said.

Another parent said her 13-year-old and 11-year-old daughters attend the school, and said her eldest child called her to say the police brought dogs to search her classroom.

"This school is the worst school ever, so it didn't surprise me," said the mother. "But I didn't think it would happen while my kids went to this school, so I'm about to remove them both from this school."

Police said other students notified school officials after seeing the guns.

The four suspects faced a judge Thursday morning and were charged with possession of a loaded firearm. They will be held in secure detention until their next court date scheduled for Friday afternoon.
