Fort Lauderdale airport shooting captured on surveillance video

Federal investigators search for shooter's motive

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The moment that gunman Esteban Santiago opened fire on travelers at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday was captured by security cameras.

The video, which was shared with TMZ, shows Santiago reaching for a gun from his waistband and opening fire in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2.

Right when the shooting starts people dropped to the ground for safety.

The shooting claimed the lives of five people and injured six others.

It's unclear who released the video, but several agencies had access to the video, including the FBI and the Broward Sheriff's Office.

"We are aware of the posting of a portion of Friday's incident on a website," FLL spokesman Greg Meyer said in a statement. "There is an investigation underway associated with the airport surveillance video."

Local 10 News reporter Sanela Sabovic spoke to a BSO representative who said only that the FBI is the lead in the investigation.

"We are aware of a video circulating claiming to portray the Ft. Lauderdale airport shooting incident," the FBI said in a statement. "The FBI is not prepared to comment on or to confirm/deny its authenticity."

Travelers Local 10 News spoke to were stunned that someone would release such a horrifying video without permission.

"I think that it's inappropriate to release a video like that for every one to see," Mia Lopez said. "You don't know whose family saw that. You don't know who was affected by that."

Officials said it is still unclear why the shooter picked the Fort Lauderdale airport and what his motivation was to attack.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel appeared Sunday morning on the Local 10 News show "This Week In South Florida" to speak about the shooting.

He said Santiago told investigators that a chip was placed in his head by an agency .

"The CIA or some agency had put a chip in his head and they were programming him and they forced him to watch a video on ISIS, and that changed and (he) said he was paid a certain amount of money by ISIS an hour or two later, so at this point we really don't know," Israel said.

Santiago is slated to remain at the Broward County Jail, where he is being held on federal charges that could carry a death sentence,  until Monday when he is expected to be transferred to a federal facility in Miami.
