New York man found dead in water at Florida Keys resort

Body of Dennis O'Rourke, 58, found at Smuggler's Cove Resort & Marina

ISLAMORADA, Fla. – A New York man was found dead in the water Thursday at a Florida Keys resort, Monroe County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.

Sheriff's deputies were called to Smuggler's Cove Resort & Marina in Islamorada early Thursday morning to conduct a welfare check on a guest.

A friend of Dennis O'Rourke, 68, of Hicksville, New York, said he hadn't heard from O'Rourke, who was staying on a houseboat that he and a friend had rented for a week, and he was worried about him.

As deputies made their way to the houseboat, they spotted a body in the water. The body was pulled from the water and identified as O'Rourke.

The friend who was staying with O'Rourke on the boat said he last saw him at the resort bar. He said he looked for O'Rourke but couldn't find him, so he returned to their rental boat.

O'Rourke's body was taken to the Monroe County medical examiner's office, where an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Herrin said there were no obvious signs of foul play.
